Fields of Mistria supports both keyboard & mouse and controller, and almost every input can be customised. This guide lists all the default controls for both, then walks through the most useful settings changes — including the one keybind every new player should set up right away. If you are just starting out, pair this with our Fields of Mistria Beginner's Guide.

How to Rebind Controls
Open the Journal with Escape, then head to the Settings tab to find the Controls section.
Every keybinding can be changed through the in-game settings. Each action supports up to two assigned inputs, so you can keep a default and add your own alternative.
?? How to Rebind a Control
Open the Journal & Settings
Press Esc (keyboard) or + (controller) to open the Journal, then open the Settings tab.
Open the Controls section
Select Controls. Every action is listed with its current input(s).
Assign a new input
Select the action you want to change, then press the new key or button to bind it.
Reset to default
Hover over an action and hold Backspace (keyboard) or + (controller) to restore its default binding.
Useful Settings Worth Changing
Adjust UI and world scale early so the game feels comfortable on your display.
Beyond keybindings, a few settings dramatically improve the experience. Set these up early rather than waiting until something feels wrong.
Repeated Tool Use
As covered above, bind "Use Tool (Repeated)" so you can hold a button to keep working. This is the single most impactful comfort setting in the game.
Scale & Zoom
The scale options let you adjust how large the world and UI appear. If the game feels too zoomed-out (or the UI too small) on your monitor, tweak these before diving into a long session.
Pause on Unfocus
With pause-on-unfocus, time freezes whenever another window overlaps the game — handy for quick multitasking.
One of the game's most convenient touches: time freezes when the game window loses focus. You do not even need to minimise it — as long as another window slightly overlaps Fields of Mistria, the in-game clock stops, letting you check a guide or reply to a message without losing precious daylight. Combined with the fact that any open menu also pauses time, you have plenty of ways to take a breather mid-day.
