Three Different Things Called "Essence"

Fields of Mistria uses the word "Essence" for three completely different things. Getting them confused is the single biggest source of player bewilderment. Here's the breakdown before we go any further.

Currency

? Essence

The main magical currency. Drops as glowing purple orbs from all activities. Used to buy skill perks and craft Essence Stones. Tracked in the top-right HUD.

Crafted Item

?? Essence Stone

Crafted from Stone + Essence at the Stone Refinery. Comes in Tiny, Small, Medium and Large sizes. Powers sprinklers (Water Sprite) and auto-petters (Animal Sprite).

Monster Drop

?? Essence Drop

A purple teardrop item dropped by Essence Bats in the Mines. A separate crafting ingredient. Not the same as Essence the currency.

How to Get Essence (the Currency)

The ability to sense and collect Essence is granted by Caldarus on Year 1, Spring Day 3, during your first cutscene at the dragon statue on your farm. After that, it drops passively from everything you do.

Essence drops from every skill activity in the game:

  • Farming — tilling, planting, watering, harvesting
  • Woodcutting — chopping trees and branches
  • Mining — breaking rocks and ore in the Mines
  • Fishing — catching fish
  • Foraging — picking up wild items
  • Cooking — cooking dishes at a Kitchen
  • Ranching — feeding and petting animals
  • Blacksmithing — crafting at the Forge or workbench
  • Archaeology — digging artifact spots

Essence orbs are collected automatically when you walk near them — no interaction needed. Your running total is shown in the top-right corner of the HUD, directly below your Tesserae count.

? How to Farm Essence Fast

Mine rocks in the Mines

The fastest Essence per action. Every rock you smash has a high chance to drop an orb. Run mine floors you can clear quickly.

Chop trees around Mistria

Trees and branches around town and the Eastern Road drop Essence and respawn, so revisit the same areas daily.

Run the farm till-plant-water loop

Players report repeatedly tilling, planting and watering the same 36-tile patch gives excellent Essence per stamina — especially with Gold tools.

Do everything

Normal daily routines (farming, foraging, fishing) steadily build your Essence total. Don't grind specifically — just keep busy.

Essence Stones: Powering Sprinklers and Auto-Petters

Essence Stones were added in the March 2025 v0.13.0 update. They are crafted items — made from Stone + Essence at the Stone Refinery — that power two key late-game automation tools:

  • Water Sprite Statue — the sprinkler. Place an Essence Stone inside to keep it running.
  • Animal Sprite Statue — the auto-petter. Same mechanic.

You can also find Essence Stones in Mine chests as random loot — watch for mimic enemies that disguise themselves as chests and deal damage when interacted with.

?? Sprinklers drain Essence fast. One player tracked their Essence at 188,000 before sprinklers, then watched it drop to 75,000 after running 73 sprinklers for two in-game years. If you plan a large sprinkler farm, budget your Essence accordingly — prioritise buying skill perks first, then invest in sprinkler coverage. Consider using the Summon Rain magic spell on big watering days instead of relying entirely on sprinklers.

Mist Spots

Mist Spots are glowing patches found around the Mistria world map. Interacting with one costs a small amount of Essence and rewards a hidden item in return. They are worth checking whenever you walk past — the Essence cost is minor and the rewards (rare forageables, crafting materials or unique items) can be excellent.

Essence Drop (The Monster Item)

Essence Bats in the Tide Caverns and Deep Earth sections of the Mines drop the Essence Drop item — not the same as the Essence currency.

Essence Drop is a completely separate item — a purple teardrop-shaped resource that drops from Essence Bat enemies in the Mines. It is not the same as Essence the currency, and it cannot be used for skill perks or Essence Stones.

  • Found in: Tide Caverns and Deep Earth sections of the Mines (past the Water Seal)
  • Drop rate improves the deeper you go
  • Watch out for Essence Bats' sonic attack — they show an exclamation mark before firing purple rays that can't be deflected; dodge sideways
  • Sells for 20 Tesserae, but don't sell it early — it's a crafting ingredient for the Cottage Garden decor set (unlocked at Town Rank 50+)
