Fields of Mistria uses a save system that will feel familiar to Stardew Valley players — but there are a couple of important quirks worth knowing so you never lose progress to an unexpected crash. How to Save With the Diary

The main way to save manually is the diary (journal) next to your bed in the farmhouse. Crucially, this lets you save partway through a day without sleeping — a lifesaver when you want to test something, before a risky mine run, or simply to lock in a productive day before the game can crash.

How the Bedtime Autosave Works

Sleeping in your bed automatically saves your game in the morning.

Every time your character sleeps in bed, the game automatically saves in the morning. This is convenient, but there's a catch: the bedtime autosave keeps only one file per character and overwrites it each time you sleep. It is not a substitute for manual saving.

?? Don't rely on autosave alone. Because the days are short and there's no mid-day menu save, a crash before bedtime can undo a whole productive day. Save with the diary regularly — especially before mining, festivals, or anything experimental.

How to Make Multiple Save Files

If you want more than one farm — a main run and a side game, or a fresh start without losing your progress — you need to understand the difference between the two save types.

To keep multiple runs safe, always save with the diary. Diary saves show up under Load Game (rather than Continue), letting you switch between farms. If you have a recent diary save of your main farm, you can safely press New Game to start a second run without losing the first.

?? Tip: Diary saves accumulate over time and are not deleted automatically, so occasionally tidy up old journal saves you no longer need. Bedtime autosaves stay at one per farmer.

Where Are Save Files Stored?

On Windows, Fields of Mistria stores its save files in the AppData folder. To find them:

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Enter %USERPROFILE%/AppData/Local/FieldsOfMistria and press Enter.
  3. Open the saves folder — diary saves appear as multiple files, while the bedtime autosave is a single file.
?? Back up before editing. If you ever need to recover an overwritten file, copy the whole save folder somewhere safe first. Editing or renaming save files is done at your own risk, so make a backup before you touch anything.
