Magic is one of Fields of Mistria's most distinctive features — the thing that pushes it beyond a straight Stardew Valley clone and into its own fantasy identity. Granted to you by Caldarus, the ancient dragon sleeping beneath your farm, spells are powerful tools that can save a watering day, restore all your stamina at once, or rain fire on mine monsters. The catch: Mana is extremely scarce, so every spell cast is a meaningful decision. This guide covers everything you need to know. New? Check our Beginner's Guide and Skills Guide too.
How to Unlock Magic
Magic is locked behind Mine progression. Here is the exact sequence to get your first spell:
? How to Unlock Magic
Reopen the Mines
Raise your Town Rank to 10 (Stone) to unlock the Mines story quest. See our Town Upgrades guide.
Reach Mine Floor 10
Descend to Floor 10 of the Mines. A faint whisper from Caldarus signals you've hit the threshold.
Return to your farm
Come back to the Caldarus dragon statue on your farm. He grants you the Full Restore spell and your first Mana Point.
Pin the spell in your Journal
Open Journal ? Magic Spells tab ? pin the spell you want to use. Only one can be active at a time.
Cast it
Hold C (default) to cast the pinned spell. Each cast costs Mana.
All Spells in Fields of Mistria
All 4 spells are unlocked by progressing through the Mines and breaking Seals.
There are currently 4 spells in Fields of Mistria as of the v0.13.0 update. More are expected with future mine updates. Each is unlocked by breaking a specific Seal deeper in the Mines, then collecting the reward from Caldarus on your farm.
Full Restore
Fully restores all of your Health and Stamina. Your first spell and one of the most consistently useful — it's a free mid-day energy refill on days when you're running low.
Summon Rain
Creates a brief rainstorm that waters your entire farm at once. Best used on large planting days when watering manually would drain most of your stamina. Unlock by offering a Ruby, Lantern Moth, Stone Loach and Upper Mines Mushroom to the Water Seal shrine.
Growth
Instantly grows crops in a radius around you, skipping several days of growth. Incredibly powerful for season transitions when you plant late and need crops to mature quickly. Unlock by offering a Sapphire, Archerfish, Coral Mantis and Jade Dulse to the Earth Seal shrine.
Dragon's Breath
A powerful combat attack that deals fire damage to enemies in an area. Best used in the deeper mine floors where enemy density and difficulty is high. Unlock by progressing to the Lava Caves area of the Mines.
| Spell | Mana Cost | Unlock Requirement | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full Restore | 1 | Mine Floor 10 | Mid-day stamina & health save |
| Summon Rain | 1 | Water Seal | Large planting / watering days |
| Growth | 1 | Earth Seal | Late-season crop catch-up |
| Dragon's Breath | 1 | Lava Caves | Combat in deep Mine floors |
How Mana Works
Mana is the most tightly constrained resource in the game. Each spell costs 1 Mana, and Mana restores very slowly — only ¼ of a point per night. That means a full Mana point takes 4 nights to regenerate from zero. Treat every spell cast as a multi-day commitment.
How to Restore Mana Faster
| Method | Amount Restored | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep (per night) | ¼ Mana Point | Passive — slowest method |
| Mana Potion | Instant | Available from Valen; rare in loot chests |
| Magical Meals perk | 1 Mana per dish | Cooking skill perk — dishes with 4+ ingredients get a chance of Magical Infusion |
How to Use Magic Efficiently
Because Mana is so scarce, the key to magic is choosing when not to cast as much as knowing when to cast.
- Save Summon Rain for your biggest planting days — when you've just planted 100+ new crops and watering would burn most of your stamina, that's when it earns its Mana cost back.
- Use Full Restore before a long mine run — refilling stamina and health lets you push deeper without burning food.
- Use Growth at season transitions — if you planted something late and it won't mature in time, Growth saves the harvest.
- Don't use Dragon's Breath on early floors — early enemies are manageable with your sword. Save fire for the Lava Cave floors where it matters.
- Don't wait to buy Mana Potions from Valen — they're not always in stock, but grab them whenever you see them.
